What AI training jobs are there for PhDs?
AI labs hire PhDs and PhD students to write research-level questions their models get wrong, and to grade model answers step by step in their own field. The work is remote and hourly, and listings that ask for a PhD pay more than AI training as a whole. Most are in science, STEM and math.

What does a PhD do in AI training?
- Write hard questions. Problems a model fails on, with a worked answer you can defend. Labs use them to test and train reasoning.
- Grade model answers. Check each step of a proof, derivation or analysis and say where it goes wrong.
- Build rubrics. Write the criteria a good answer must meet, so other graders and models can be scored against them.
It is short, focused contract work. It doesn't need ML knowledge; it needs the depth in your field that your PhD gave you.
Can PhD students apply, or only graduates?
Many listings take current PhD students or ask for "Masters or PhD". Some, especially in math and physics, want a finished doctorate or publications. Read the requirements in each listing's Quick look before you apply. In the US, Handshake AI runs a fellowship aimed at master's and PhD students; international students need work authorization such as CPT or OPT.
Other questions people ask
How much do PhD AI training jobs pay?
The typical top rate on listings that ask for a PhD is $90/hr, and 54 advertise $100/hr or more.
Which PhD fields pay the most?
On today's PhD listings, math, medicine and science have the highest typical top rates. See the field table above for every field.
Do I need to know machine learning?
No. You are hired for your field. The platform trains you on its task format during onboarding.
Is it OK to do this alongside a PhD stipend?
Check your funding terms and, if you are on a visa, your work authorization first. Some stipends limit outside work.
What do PhD listings test you on?
Usually a subject test or an AI interview on your research area, plus a writing sample. See getting accepted on Mercor.
