How do you get accepted on Mercor?
To get accepted on Mercor, apply to a specific role that matches your strongest credential, make sure your resume shows that credential plainly, and do well in Mercor's AI interview, which takes about 20 minutes and asks about your own experience. Take the free practice interview first, use Chrome on a computer with a working mic, and answer with concrete examples. Passing puts you in the candidate pool; a project still has to pick you.

How does the Mercor application process work?
- Create a profile and upload your resume
- Apply to a listed role
- Take the recorded AI video interview (practice round available)
- Complete any role-specific assessment and the ID check
- Accept the offer and sign the contract
Mercor estimates the time as ~30 min: resume upload + 20-min AI interview. Advertised pay across roles is $20–200/hr, paid weekly, every wednesday via Stripe (Wise in a few countries). Rubric is tracking 364 open Mercor roles today; the newest are in new this week.
What does the Mercor AI interview ask?
The interviewer asks role-specific questions. Depending on the role, that can be your past experience in depth, language skills, reasoning, or a technical problem. It generates a transcript that is used to evaluate you. Most interviews take about 20 minutes, are in English unless the role says otherwise, and you only need to complete each interview once; the result carries over to other roles that use it (Mercor help).
Accepted candidates describe the interviewer asking follow-ups based on what you just said. That makes rehearsed speeches a bad idea. It is better to know your own resume well enough to go two levels deeper on anything in it.
How should you prepare for the Mercor interview?
| Check | Why |
|---|---|
| Chrome on a laptop or desktop | Mercor recommends the latest Chrome. Edge and Safari work; Firefox and mobile browsers don't. |
| Working mic, tested | The mic check is the only required check. A bad mic can end an interview early. |
| Headphones or external mic | Recommended by Mercor; cuts echo and background noise. |
| Quiet room, face fully visible | Camera and lighting checks are advisory, but a clear picture avoids problems. |
| Pen, paper, calculator | Allowed and useful for reasoning or math questions. |
| No AI tools open | Using LLMs to write answers is banned. |
| Practice interview done | Free, unlimited, and not shared with companies. |
Two things that trip people up: long silences (the AI may move on or interrupt) and an interview that ends far too early, which shows as "Interview too short" and costs you a retake.
What makes a Mercor application stand out?
- A resume that matches the listing's words. If the role asks for "board-certified internal medicine" or "5+ years of TypeScript", say exactly that if it's true. The interview is built from your resume.
- Specific stories. "I reviewed 40 contracts a month for a mid-size SaaS company, mostly MSAs and DPAs" beats "I have extensive legal experience."
- Thinking out loud. On reasoning questions, say how you'd check your own answer. That is the job: catching errors.
- Fewer, better applications. Applying to every listing with a generic profile tends to get nothing back.
What happens after you're accepted?
You get matched to a project, sign a contract and start. Expect work to come in project-sized chunks; when one ends, there may be a gap before the next. Common complaints from Mercor contractors: passing the interview does not mean you get a project; projects can pause or end with little notice; hourly work is time-tracked with monitoring software. That is normal for the whole industry, so it is worth also being on a second platform.

Other questions people ask
How long does Mercor take to accept you?
It varies by role. Some applicants hear back within days; many wait weeks or never hear back because the role filled. Mercor says it notifies you when an application advances, and you can keep applying to other roles meanwhile.
Can I retake the Mercor AI interview?
Yes, up to three times per interview across all applications, from the Assessments tab. A retake resets that application's progress, and hiring managers can see your retake count, so Mercor asks you to save retakes for technical problems (Mercor help).
Can I use ChatGPT during the Mercor interview?
No. Mercor allows grammar and wording checks but not large language models to write responses, rate outputs, generate explanations or evaluate code.
Why was I rejected by Mercor after passing the interview?
Passing the interview puts you in a pool; it does not guarantee a project. Roles fill, clients pick a subset of candidates, and some projects close early. Keep applying to roles that match your background.
Does Mercor pay for the interview?
No. The AI interview and assessments are unpaid. Pay starts once you are matched to a project and sign the contract.
