How do AI trainers get paid, and how do taxes work?
AI trainers are almost always paid as independent contractors: you log hours or complete tasks, and the platform pays you weekly, twice a month or per contract through Stripe, PayPal, Wise, a bank transfer or a platform wallet. No tax is withheld. You report the income yourself; in the US that means income tax plus self-employment tax, and usually quarterly estimated payments once the amounts add up. This is general information, not tax advice.

"Pays reliably" is our 1–5 grade for whether money arrives on time and in full, based on platform terms and worker reports. See how we grade.
What happens between doing the work and getting paid?
- You log time or submit tasks. Hourly contracts track time; task queues pay per task or per expected time.
- Work may be reviewed. Some platforms hold pay for rejected or low-quality tasks. Read the project's pay terms.
- The pay period closes and the platform sends the payout on its schedule.
- Your payment provider converts and deposits. Outside the US, expect conversion fees and a day or more for bank deposits.
Unpaid steps to plan for: application tests, AI interviews and most onboarding. The pay calculator shows what a rate and your weekly hours come to per month before tax, so you can set money aside.
How do taxes work for AI trainers in the US?
- Self-employment tax. On top of income tax, contractors pay Social Security and Medicare as self-employment tax, generally when net self-employment earnings are $400 or more for the year (IRS).
- Form 1099-NEC. For payments made in 2026 onward, the reporting threshold rose from $600 to $2,000 per payer per year. Income below the threshold is still taxable (Anchin).
- Quarterly estimated tax. Because nothing is withheld, the IRS expects estimated payments during the year if you'll owe enough (IRS).
- Keep records. Save every payout statement and any business expense receipts.
What about outside the US?
| Situation | What usually applies |
|---|---|
| Non-US person paid by a US platform | You'll be asked for a W-8BEN so US tax isn't withheld. You report the income in your own country. |
| India | Taxable as income in India. Ask a CA about presumptive taxation and GST. See AI training jobs in India. |
| UK | Self-employment income; a £1,000 trading allowance may cover very small amounts (GOV.UK). Above that, register for Self Assessment. |
| Everywhere | Keep a monthly log: date, platform, gross USD, amount received in local currency. |
What payment requests are red flags?
A real platform pays you; it never asks you to pay it. Stop if anyone asks for a registration fee, a deposit to "unlock" tasks or withdrawals, crypto, gift cards, or to receive money and forward part of it. Those are scams. See how to spot fake AI training jobs.

Other questions people ask
Do AI training platforms withhold taxes?
Generally no. You are an independent contractor, so the platform pays the gross amount and you are responsible for income tax (and in the US, self-employment tax). Some countries' rules differ; check yours.
Will I get a 1099 from Mercor, Outlier or other platforms?
If you're a US person and a platform pays you at least the reporting threshold in a year, it should issue a Form 1099-NEC (or a payment processor may issue a 1099-K). For payments made in 2026 onward, the 1099-NEC threshold rose from $600 to $2,000. Your income is taxable whether or not you get a form.
What is a W-8BEN and why do platforms ask for it?
It's an IRS form non-US people give a US payer to certify they are not a US person. Platforms collect it so they don't have to withhold US tax on your payments. You still owe tax in your own country.
How long until I get my first payout?
Depends on the schedule: weekly platforms usually pay for the previous week's approved work; others pay twice a month or per contract. Your first payout can take longer while ID and payment details are verified.
Can I deduct expenses from AI training income?
In many countries, contractors can deduct genuine business expenses, such as a share of equipment or internet. The rules are country-specific. Keep receipts and ask a tax professional.
