How do you spot a fake AI training job or recruiter?
A fake AI training job almost always does one of three things: contacts you first on WhatsApp, Telegram or text; asks you to pay anything (a fee, a deposit, crypto to "unlock" tasks or withdrawals); or can't be found on the platform's own website. Real platforms like Mercor, Outlier and DataAnnotation are free, and you apply on their own sites. If someone pays you a little first and then asks for money, it's a task scam.

What are the red flags of a fake AI training job?
| Red flag | What real platforms do |
|---|---|
| Fail Unsolicited WhatsApp, Telegram, SMS or Instagram message | You apply on their website. Recruiters, if any, point you to that site. |
| Fail Registration fee, training fee, "kit" or certification fee | Free to join. Assessments are unpaid but cost nothing. |
| Fail Deposit or crypto "top-up" to unlock tasks or withdraw | They pay you. You never pay them. |
| Fail Tasks are liking videos, rating products or "optimizing" apps | Tasks are writing, rating and fixing AI answers under detailed guidelines. |
| Fail Earnings shown in an app you can't withdraw from | Payouts go to Stripe, PayPal, Wise, a bank or a known wallet on a set schedule. |
| Fail Group chat full of people posting big earnings | No hype groups. Official subreddits are full of complaints, which is normal. |
| Check Email from a lookalike domain | Email comes from the platform's real domain. Check it letter by letter. |
How does the typical "AI task" scam work?
The US Federal Trade Commission describes these as "gamified" job scams, and the pattern is consistent (FTC):
- An unexpected text or WhatsApp message offers vague online work.
- You're given repetitive tasks, like rating product images or liking videos, in an app that shows "commissions". Tasks come in sets, with promises of leveling up.
- You get a small real payout early, to build trust.
- Then you're told to deposit money, often crypto, to finish the next set or withdraw. The FTC's verdict: "That money isn't real."
- If you hesitate, you're added to a group chat of "workers" posting success stories.
It's growing fast. The FTC reported about 20,000 task scam reports in the first half of 2024, up from about 5,000 in all of 2023, and job scam losses topped $220 million in the first half of 2024 alone. Scammers now use "AI training" and "AI data annotation" as the cover story because real AI training jobs are in the news.
How do you check whether a recruiter is real?
- Go to the platform's site yourself. Type the address; don't click the link you were sent. Find the role there.
- Check the sender's domain. Lookalikes swap letters or add words (e.g. "-careers", "-hr", "-support").
- Search the name plus "scam". The FTC recommends searching the company with "scam", "review" or "complaint" (FTC).
- Ask: does any step involve me paying? If yes, stop.
- Never send ID documents over chat apps. Real platforms verify ID inside their own site.

What about legit platforms with bad behavior?
Not every bad experience is a scam. Real platforms can still remove you with little explanation, leave you with an empty queue, or hold pay during a review. Those are reliability problems, and we grade them separately on each platform's grade sheet, with red flags where workers report them. Start at all platforms or read is DataAnnotation legit.
Where do you report an AI job scam?
- US: ReportFraud.ftc.gov
- India: cybercrime.gov.in or call 1930
- Everywhere: report the account inside WhatsApp or Telegram, tell your bank or payment app immediately, and warn the real platform's support team that someone is using its name.

Other questions people ask
Do real AI training platforms ever charge a fee?
No. Mercor, Outlier, micro1, DataAnnotation, Handshake AI, Turing and the other platforms we track are free to join. The FTC's rule of thumb applies: honest employers never ask you to pay to get a job.
Do Mercor or Outlier recruit on WhatsApp or Telegram?
Treat any WhatsApp or Telegram job offer as fake unless you can find the same role on the platform's own website and apply there. Real platforms run applications and tasks on their own sites, and you can always go there directly.
I was paid a small amount first. Doesn't that prove it's real?
No. Paying a small amount first is a standard task-scam move to build trust before asking for a deposit. The FTC describes exactly this pattern.
I already paid a "deposit". What do I do?
Stop sending money, even if they say one more payment unlocks a withdrawal. Contact your bank or payment app right away, keep screenshots, and report it: ReportFraud.ftc.gov in the US, cybercrime.gov.in or 1930 in India, or your national fraud agency.
Is a real platform a scam if my account was deactivated without pay?
That is a dispute, not necessarily a scam. Real platforms sometimes remove workers or hold pay during quality reviews. Contact support in writing, keep records, and check our grade sheets for how each platform handles payouts.
