How much do AI trainers actually make per month?
On open AI training listings today, the typical top rate is $70/hr; generalist rating and writing work sits around $50/hr, and legal work around $120/hr. The rate is rarely the limit; hours are. Someone at $25/hr who gets 10 hours a week makes about $1,080 a month before tax, and many people have weeks with no tasks at all.

What do AI training platforms advertise per hour?
These are each platform's advertised ranges from our grade sheets, highest ceiling first. The low end is what most new generalists see. The high end is usually reserved for credentialed experts.

What do open listings pay by kind of work?
To find your likely rate, look at what listings in your field offer today. These come from the 1,713 open listings that state an hourly rate, highest first.
| Kind of work | Open listings | Typical top rate | Middle half |
|---|---|---|---|
| Legal | 100 | $120/hr | $85–170/hr |
| Medical | 158 | $100/hr | $70–125/hr |
| Finance | 148 | $100/hr | $70–125/hr |
| Coding | 242 | $90/hr | $70–110/hr |
| Science | 114 | $90/hr | $70–109/hr |
| Math | 47 | $90/hr | $28–200/hr |
| Image | 80 | $70/hr | $35–105/hr |
| STEM | 158 | $70/hr | $54–120/hr |
| Writing | 87 | $68/hr | $50–101/hr |
| Generalist | 204 | $50/hr | $30–70/hr |
| Video | 28 | $50/hr | $24–103/hr |
| Languages | 204 | $50/hr | $40–65/hr |
| Audio | 245 | $40/hr | $35–80/hr |
Typical top rate: half the listings in that field offer this or more at the top of their range. Middle half: the 25th to 75th percentile of top rates. New starters usually land at the bottom of a listing's range. The gap between audio ($40/hr) and legal ($120/hr) is why leading with a credential matters.
What is a realistic monthly income?
Here is plain arithmetic: hourly rate × hours per week × 4.33 weeks, rounded to the nearest $10, before tax and fees. Find your likely rate in the left column and the hours you can really get across the top. For your exact rate and hours, use the pay calculator.
| Rate | 5 hrs/week | 10 hrs/week | 20 hrs/week | 30 hrs/week |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| $15/hr | $330 | $650 | $1,300 | $1,950 |
| $25/hr | $540 | $1,080 | $2,170 | $3,250 |
| $40/hr | $870 | $1,730 | $3,470 | $5,200 |
| $75/hr | $1,630 | $3,250 | $6,500 | $9,750 |
| $100/hr | $2,170 | $4,330 | $8,670 | $13,000 |
How many hours a week can you actually get?
This is the question that matters, and there is no single answer. What we see across platforms:
- Contract projects (Mercor, micro1, Turing, Handshake AI) often state hours up front: a minimum like 10–20 hours a week, or a weekly cap. When the project ends, the hours stop until you're matched to another.
- Task queues (Outlier, DataAnnotation) have no set hours. When a project is live you can sometimes work as much as you like; when it isn't, your dashboard is empty. Outlier states there are no minimum hours (Outlier).
- Your country and language change what you're eligible for. Some projects are US-only.
- Your quality score controls access. Strong reviews unlock better projects; a bad review can lock you out.
A safer way to estimate: assume you'll get half the hours you hope for in your first two months.
What eats into AI training earnings?
| Cost | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Unpaid screening and onboarding | Assessments and project courses are usually unpaid. Outlier says onboarding typically takes 30 to 90 minutes, and each new project can add more. |
| Per-task time limits | If a task pays for 30 minutes and takes you 50, your real rate drops by 40%. |
| Taxes | Platforms pay you as a contractor and don't withhold tax. See payments and taxes. |
| Payout fees and FX | PayPal, Wise and bank transfers can take a cut when converting USD to your currency. |
| Dry spells | Weeks without tasks lower your average far more than a rate cut. |
How do people earn more?
- Lead with your strongest credential. A nurse doing generalist rating earns generalist rates. The same nurse on a medical project often earns two to three times more.
- Be on two or three platforms. It is the only real defense against empty queues.
- Protect your quality score. Slow down on new projects. Better projects go to people with good reviews.
- Track your effective rate. Write down actual time per task for a week. Drop projects where you're consistently under the target time's pay.

Other questions people ask
Can you make a full-time living from AI training work?
Some people do, usually experts on a long project or people who stack two or three platforms. Most don't. Hours depend on what projects are live for your skills and country, and a project can end in a week. Plan as if it is side income until you have had several steady months.
Is AI training pay per hour or per task?
Both exist. Mercor, micro1 and Handshake AI contracts are usually hourly. Outlier and some DataAnnotation projects pay per task or set an expected time per task, so your effective hourly rate depends on how fast you work while staying accurate.
Is onboarding paid?
Usually not. Assessments, AI interviews and project onboarding courses are unpaid on most platforms, and they can add up to several hours before your first paid task.
Why do people in India or the Philippines see lower rates?
Many projects set rates by country. The same task can be offered at a lower rate outside the US, UK, Canada and Australia. See AI training jobs in India.
How much do AI trainers make a year?
There is no reliable annual figure because hours vary so much. Use the monthly table on this page: multiply your realistic hourly rate by the hours you can actually get, not the hours you want.
