What AI training jobs are there for software engineers?
Software engineers do some of the best-paid AI training work: writing coding problems, grading and fixing AI-written code, writing tests, and judging multi-step coding agents. Platforms like Mercor, micro1, Turing, Outlier and DataAnnotation hire for it, and the typical top rate on open coding listings today is $90/hr, with senior engineers above that. Python is the most requested language.

What does an AI coding task look like?
| Task | What you do |
|---|---|
| Code review / ranking | Compare two AI solutions to the same problem. Run them, find bugs, say which is better and why. |
| Problem writing | Write a coding problem the model fails on, plus a reference solution and tests. |
| Fix the model's code | Take broken AI-written code and make it correct, explaining each change. |
| Repo-level / agent tasks | Judge whether an AI agent resolved a real issue in a codebase, similar to SWE-bench tasks. |
| Rubric writing | Write the checklist an automated grader uses to score coding answers. |
You'll mostly work in a browser tool, sometimes with a sandbox to run code. Expect strict style and explanation requirements, not just "does it pass".

DataAnnotation lists coding roles at up to $150+/hr on its site (DataAnnotation). Treat any top-of-range number as the ceiling for senior people on specialist projects. How do you pass AI coding assessments?
- Practice timed problems in your main language. Medium-difficulty algorithm problems are typical. Clean, correct and explained beats clever.
- Talk about edge cases out loud in AI interviews (Mercor, micro1's Zara). The job is finding what the model missed; show that you look for it.
- Read the code you're judging line by line. Assessment items often hide one off-by-one or an unhandled empty input.
- Write explanations a reviewer can verify. "Fails when
numsis empty: line 4 indexesnums[0]" not "has a bug". - No AI tools unless the project allows them.
Platform-specific prep: Mercor, micro1 Zara, Outlier.
Is AI training a good side gig for developers?
It can be. Pros: high hourly rates, fully remote, no client hunting. Cons: projects end without much notice, tasks can be repetitive, and there's no career ladder. Developers outside the US often find the USD rates strong relative to local salaries; Turing in particular lists many roles open to developers in India, though most of its contracts want overlap with US Pacific time. See AI training jobs in India.
One thing to check: if you have a full-time job, read your employment contract's outside-work and IP clauses before signing a contractor agreement.

Other questions people ask
Which programming languages are most in demand for AI training?
Python is asked for most often. JavaScript/TypeScript, Java, C++, Go, Rust and SQL also show up regularly. Some projects want specific frameworks or areas like data engineering, DevOps or security.
Do I need machine learning experience for AI coding jobs?
No. Most coding tasks are about judging and writing normal software: is this code correct, efficient, idiomatic and safe? ML experience helps for the small number of ML-specific roles.
Are AI coding assessments timed?
Usually. Turing uses timed coding tests; Mercor and micro1 combine an AI interview with a coding exercise for technical roles. Practice under time pressure beforehand.
Is it OK to use Copilot or ChatGPT on AI coding tasks?
Assume no unless the project guidelines say otherwise. Many projects explicitly ban AI tools, and Mercor's interview rules ban using LLMs to write answers or evaluate code.
Can junior developers or CS students get these jobs?
Some. Entry-level coding projects exist on Outlier and Turing, and Handshake AI hires students. The best-paid roles want several years of professional experience.
