How do you pass the Outlier assessment and onboarding?

To pass Outlier, you need to clear two unpaid, graded steps: the platform's skill screenings, and a separate onboarding course and quiz for each project you're invited to. Read every guideline before the quiz, write all answers yourself with no AI tools, verify your ID with a local phone number and never use a VPN. Then go slowly on your first tasks, because early reviews decide which projects you keep.

What does Outlier ask for when you sign up?

Outlier's own list: a valid ID and a mobile phone number from your country of residence, a current resume and a LinkedIn profile. It wants at least undergraduate-level expertise, prefers graduate students, master's and PhD holders, and requires English communication skills; some projects have their own language requirements (Outlier).

  1. Create an account and list your expertise and languages
  2. Verify your ID and location with a local phone number
  3. Pass the unpaid skill screenings
  4. Wait for a project invite
  5. Finish the project onboarding course and quiz, then start tasks

What is in the Outlier assessment?

There isn't one fixed test. What you see depends on the skills and languages on your profile:

Outlier screening stages
StageTypical contentPaid?
Skill screeningWriting samples, rating AI responses against instructions, subject questions (math, coding, a language)No
Identity and location checkGovernment ID, local phone numberNo
Project onboardingReading the project's guidelines, short course, graded quiz or practice tasksUsually no
First tasksReal paid tasks, reviewed closelyYes

How do you pass the Outlier skill screening?

  • Only claim skills you can defend. Listing ten subjects gets you ten screenings you might fail.
  • Read the prompt instructions word by word. Most screening items test whether you notice a constraint: a word limit, a required format, a detail the AI ignored.
  • Justify with specifics. "Response B misstates the boiling point at altitude and ignores the user's request for a table" scores better than "B is less accurate".
  • Write in your own voice. AI-written answers are a common reason workers give for being flagged.
  • Do it in one sitting on a computer, not a phone, without switching tabs to other tools.

How do you pass a project onboarding?

This is where most people get stuck. Each project has its own guideline document, sometimes dozens of pages. The quiz tests edge cases from it.

  1. Read the guidelines fully once, then again with notes. Write down every "always" and "never".
  2. Pay special attention to how the project defines its rating scale. A "3" on one project means something else on another.
  3. Answer the quiz from the guideline's definitions, not from your own taste.
  4. Don't download or copy the guidelines outside the platform. Some workers report this as a reason for removal.

How much does Outlier pay once you're in?

Advertised range: $10–50/hr. English generalist work is usually $15–25/hr; coding and expert projects list $30–50/hr and rare specialist ML roles have listed more. Some non-English language projects pay under $10/hr.

Payouts: Weekly, every Tuesday, via PayPal, Airtm or ACH bank transfer. Outlier's rates are set per project and can change between projects, so check the rate on each project before you sink hours into onboarding. The pay calculator shows what a project rate is worth per month at the hours you expect.

How do you avoid getting removed?

The problems workers report most: sudden deactivation or project removal with little explanation; empty queues for weeks; delayed or held payments during account reviews. You can't control queue length, but you can control the common removal triggers: no VPN, no AI-written text, no copying guidelines off-platform, and honest time logging. If your reviews dip, slow down; better projects go to people with steady scores.

If Outlier stays quiet, the usual next step is DataAnnotation or an expert marketplace like Mercor. Compare them on Outlier vs DataAnnotation.

Other questions people ask

Is the Outlier assessment paid?

No. The platform skill screenings and project onboarding courses are unpaid. Outlier says onboarding typically takes 30 to 90 minutes; project-specific onboarding adds more.

Can I retake an Outlier assessment?

Generally no for a given project; failing a project's onboarding usually closes that project for you, not your whole account. You can still be invited to other projects.

Why does my Outlier dashboard say no tasks available?

Being onboarded doesn't mean a project has work for you. Queues depend on what clients are running and your country, language and quality score. Empty queues for days or weeks are common.

Why did Outlier remove me after onboarding?

Outlier rarely gives detailed reasons. Workers most often report removals after being flagged for using AI tools, copy-pasting, low review scores or using a VPN. Write everything yourself and follow the guidelines exactly.

Who owns Outlier?

Outlier is operated by Scale AI (outlier.ai).
