What AI training jobs are there for lawyers?

Lawyers are hired by AI training platforms to write difficult legal questions, grade AI answers for accuracy and jurisdiction, and build rubrics that define a correct legal answer. Mercor, micro1, Handshake AI, Outlier and DataAnnotation all list legal roles, and attorney projects are among the best-paid in the field: DataAnnotation, for example, lists professional roles including legal at up to $125+/hr. It is remote, part-time contract work.

Typical legal AI training tasks
TaskExample
Question writingA fact pattern on a non-compete in a state that restricts them, built so a generic answer fails.
Answer gradingScore a model's explanation of adverse possession for accuracy, jurisdiction, caveats and clarity.
Rubric buildingList the elements, exceptions and authorities a correct answer must cover.
Drafting reviewMark up an AI-drafted clause or memo the way you'd review a junior associate's work.
Citation checksConfirm cited cases and statutes exist and say what the model claims.

The common thread: models write confident, well-formatted legal text that is wrong in ways only a practitioner notices. Spotting a hallucinated case or a missed jurisdictional exception is the whole job.

How do lawyers get accepted?

  1. Apply to roles that name your jurisdiction and practice area. A New York securities lawyer is a better match for a securities project than for "general legal".
  2. List bar admissions, years of practice and specialties at the top of your resume.
  3. Prepare for the AI interview. Expect questions about matters you've handled (without confidential detail) and about legal reasoning. Setup tips: Mercor, micro1 Zara.
  4. Treat the written assessment like a bench memo. Name the rule, the exception, the jurisdiction and the weak point in the AI's answer.

What ethics issues should lawyers watch?

  • Confidentiality. Never base a task on a real client matter in a way that could identify it. Your duties under rules like ABA Model Rule 1.6 don't switch off because the reader is a model.
  • Firm policy. Get approval for outside paid work if your firm or employer requires it.
  • Not legal advice. You're producing training data, not advising anyone. Don't describe this work as legal services.
  • The contractor agreement. Read the confidentiality and IP terms; you'll typically assign everything you write to the client.

Is AI training worth it for lawyers?

For attorneys between roles, part-time practitioners, or those wanting flexible evening work, it can pay well per hour with no business development. It is not a substitute for a practice: projects end, and there's no guarantee of the next one. Being on two platforms evens out the gaps. Other questions people ask

Do I need to be a licensed attorney for legal AI training jobs?

For the best-paid legal projects, usually yes: bar admission and years of practice. Some projects take JD holders, law students or paralegals at lower rates. The listing says which.

Which jurisdictions are in demand?

US law is the most common, often by state or practice area. UK, Canadian, Indian and EU law projects also appear. Being admitted in the jurisdiction the project covers matters more than general seniority.

Is AI training work legal practice?

You are not advising clients; you write and grade hypothetical questions and answers. But your professional duties still apply to how you behave, especially confidentiality: never put real client information into a task.

Can I do this while working at a law firm?

Check your firm's outside-activity and conflict policies first. Many firms require approval for paid outside work.

What practice areas pay most?

Platforms don't publish rates by practice area. Rate depends more on seniority, jurisdiction and whether the project is posted as an expert role than on the practice area itself. Check the rate on each listing.
