Can doctors and nurses do AI training work?
Yes. AI labs pay doctors, nurses, pharmacists and other clinicians to write hard medical questions, grade AI answers for clinical accuracy and safety, and build rubrics for what a good answer must include. Mercor, Alignerr, micro1, Mindrift and 4 more platforms have open medical listings today. Physician roles are among the best-paid AI training work (the typical top rate on open medical listings today is $100/hr); nursing roles are rare (1 open today); most medical listings want MDs.

What do medical AI trainers actually do?
| Task | Example |
|---|---|
| Write hard clinical questions | A case where the obvious diagnosis is wrong, and the model should catch the red flag. |
| Grade AI answers | Score a model's answer on a dosing question for accuracy, safety, completeness and appropriate caution. |
| Build rubrics | List the 6–10 things a correct answer to a chest-pain triage question must mention. |
| Patient-facing tone checks | Judge whether an answer to a worried parent is clear, accurate and not alarming. |
| Safety review | Flag answers that give dangerous advice, skip "see a doctor now" when needed, or overstate certainty. |
The value you add is noticing what a confident, fluent answer gets subtly wrong: a contraindication, an outdated guideline, a dose that's fine for most patients but not this one.

The rate is each platform's typical top rate on its open medical listings only; "Platform says" is its overall advertised range. DataAnnotation, for comparison, lists professional roles including medical at up to $125+/hr (DataAnnotation). Live listings are on medical AI training jobs, and the newest ones in new this week. How do clinicians get accepted?
- Apply to medical roles specifically, not general rating. Generalist projects pay generalist rates no matter your degree.
- Put credentials up front: degree, specialty, board certification, license status and country, years in practice.
- Prepare for an AI interview on Mercor or micro1 that asks about your clinical experience and reasoning. Our Mercor guide covers setup.
- Expect a written assessment where you grade sample AI answers. Be specific and cite the guideline you're relying on.
- Verification: some projects check license or degree documents.
What should a doctor or nurse check before signing?
- Your employment contract. Many hospital and health-system contracts restrict outside work or require disclosure.
- Hours and caps. Some projects require minimum weekly hours; others cap them.
- Pay basis. Hourly vs per task, and whether onboarding is paid (usually not).
- Tax status. You'll be a contractor. See payments and taxes.
- Who you're dealing with. Real platforms don't recruit over WhatsApp or charge a "credential verification fee". See scam red flags.
Is it worth it for a busy clinician?
For many, yes, as flexible evening or weekend work. The work is cognitively similar to writing exam questions or peer review. The downsides are the same as everywhere in this industry: projects end without much notice, and the unpaid application steps take a few hours. If you can only do one platform, pick the one with live medical listings in your country right now.

Other questions people ask
Do AI training jobs for doctors require an active license?
It depends on the project. Some ask for an active license or board certification; others accept a medical degree, residency or specialty training. The listing states it. Nurses, pharmacists and other clinicians have their own projects.
Is AI training work considered practicing medicine?
You are not treating patients or giving advice to real people. You write and grade questions and answers that train a model. Still, read the contract and, if you are unsure how your employer or licensing body sees outside work, ask them.
Will I see real patient data?
Projects normally use synthetic or de-identified scenarios. If a task ever shows what looks like identifiable patient data, flag it to the project team and don't proceed.
Can nurses do AI training jobs?
Yes. Nursing, pharmacy, physical therapy and other allied health projects run on several platforms. Pay is typically below physician rates but above generalist work.
How many hours do medical AI projects need?
Many are flexible, from a few hours a week. Some set a minimum like 10 hours a week or a weekly cap. It is stated in the project terms before you sign.
